In the portrait photography world, many capable artists understand and utilize lights and lighting tools. Some master the use of light and break new ground visually with how they use it. Very few, however, can teach what they have mastered to others in an easy and understandable way.
Gary Box is one of those very few artists whose knowledge of lights and lighting leaves admirers wondering how he does what he does and inspires them. Beyond that, Gary’s talent for taking his knowledge and breaking it down for photographers understand in a simple way is a skill that we’ve seldom been able to enjoy throughout the history of photography education.
Gary learned from the greats “back in the day”; Leon Kennemer, Don Blair, Dean Collins, Monte Zucker, Frank Cricchio, Les Peterson, Larry Peters and other artists of the film generation. People who understood the nuances of lighting and the disciplines of getting the image perfectly lit and properly exposed in the camera.
Over time (and especially with the advent of screens on the backs of cameras) the disciplines and skills taught by those great artists have mostly disappeared. Thankfully, Gary has made it his mission to teach those essential skills to keep them alive in the industry.
I encourage you to come to the PPAM quarterly seminar on June 10th at the Holiday Inn in Dedham, MA for Gary’s program. It will be one of the best investments of your photography career!
PPAM would like to thank Vice President of Programs, Mike Stone for more information on this great event.
